–glide down the Seine in a Bateau Moche
–temporarily forgo vegetarianism
–shuffle through the crowd to see the Mona Lisa
–take the opportunity to say something about “flying buttresses” at Notre Dame
–feel light-headed at the top of the Eiffel Tower
–buy a tacky souvenir from a museum about East Germany
–tour the catacombs beneath Paris
–walk down the Champs-Elysees at night, missing my boyfriend
–be disgusted by at least one hostel bathroom
–eat something that ends in “wurst”
–try to sleep on an overnight train
–be left speechless by Dachau
–ride a bike through Berlin
–visit a castle
–gain weight
Things I will NOT do:
Work.

Jen,
Enjoy every minute. I’m a tad envious of your coming trek. But for me to really enjoy actually being on your trip, I’d have to be younger. So I guess I’ll just enjoy it through you!
dachau is heavy. i’ll never forget going there for the first time with a Jewish friend who had lost family members there. i don’t think i’ve ever seen someone cry and sob as hard as he did. it broke my heart.
3 neat things in Paris.
-go find a street near l’Ecole Militaire called Rue Cler. pedestrian only street, pretty much only locals hanging around, and tons of great shops, food and people watching. a nice little non-touristy enclave where you get a taste of real Paris
-eat at a restaurant called Chez Papa. there are multiple locations, and each as a theme, but the food is all French peasant type. my favorite location is near Notre Dame. address is 3 Rue Saint Benoit. it’s a hole in the wall jazz club with ridiculously awesome food and music. my wife and i sat there until 2am once, missed the last train and had to walk most of the way back to our hotel in the rain. it was 100% worth it!
-Paris has tons of Churches. Notre Dame and le Sacre Coeur are awesome, but my favorite is a little one near the Pantheon called Eglise Saint Etienne du Mont. we were there on Palm Sunday a few years back and caught a service there. it’s a gorgeous Church. small congregation, but it is ALIVE. the priests made us feel right at home even though we were the only non-French speakers there. it was truly an amazing experience, especially when you compare what that place is all about vs. what the pantheon is all about. it’s a very special place for me that i’ll always visit when i go back.
oh, and go eat a Paris-Brest pastry at Fauchon. *drool*
have fun!!
I am positive you are enjoying your trip. Byron says “He wants you to eat lots of fresh pastry for him.” Cheers!
I’m incredibly jealous. I go to Siberia in March and you go to France/Germany in May. Is there any justice in the universe?
