a global warming rant

If I hear one more comment about global warming I am going to scream.

The real issue is climate change, and the current weather craziness could just as easily be proof of it as it could be proof against it. I don’t know and you don’t either because there is evidence both ways. But I know this—”global warming” doesn’t mean you never feel cold.

And I’m tired of it being a political issue instead of a scientific debate.

And I’m tired of the Christian/conservative kneejerk dismissal of it. (For the record, I’m tired of those on the other side, too.) Why is the prospect that we might actually be harming our world so threatening to these groups? No one’s blaming them for it.

That is all. (Although you can read more here.)

  1. This reminds me of the woman I met at the liquor store a few weeks ago who told me this global warming thing is crap. Her evidence was that it was about 10 degrees outside. I didn’t even respond because it was such an absurd remark. Makes me think many view global warming as summers in winter.

  2. I truly believe that global warming is a relgion to some people. It gives them their purpose. I also believe that it why it is more a politcal debate then a scientific one. I also believe that it is rejected by conservatives because there will be such a negative impact on our economy if some of the global warming legislation is passed.

Personally, I think that it almost humorous and quite self centered that we could change the climate. Are we also responisble for the newly discovered cooling of Pluto? No people there. If we are lookihng at it from the standpoint of global warming scientist that the world is millions of years old it is just common sense to go back and realize that throughout history there were ice ages and periods of warming,(to get us out of the ice age) and floods and droughts. Were we causing global warming then? Don’t think so-we weren’t even around. I think there is change and that it is for the most part a cycle that we as humans may not really have the power to influence. On top of it all, we don’t have enough data for a long enough period of time to draw any real conclusions.

With that said, I do think that we should wisely use what God has given us. We should recycle, we should buy locally as much as possible. We are the stewards of this planet and should watch over it carefully.

  3. My skepticism comes from the fear-mongering. When you make people afraid, you can impose all kinds of limitations and costs on them. Global cooling (ooops… that was 20 yrs ago), I mean global warming (ooops… trends don’t show any significant increase in temps over the long haul), let’s call it “climate change” – that way we’re covered either way. There’s a lot of money to be made in fear.

    • Agreed that fear-mongering is a big part of this, at least on the part of politicians. However, the scientists doing the research aren’t interested in political gain or gaining power, they are just trying to figure out what’s happening.

Also agreed that there is a lot of money to be made on fear. Some have figured this out better than others:

  5. Good article in WSJ here: http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB10001424052748703630404575053781465774008-lMyQjAxMTAwMDEwNjExNDYyWj.html

    (thanks, Dad!)

All of which reinforces the point that both sides need to be open to science, need to be open to having their opinions changed, and need to be informed not just opinionated.

  6. [...] does not, in itself, invalidate the possibility of climate change. Treat yourself to that rant here. [...]
