Jen, Great comments, the only reason I can see why people don't put simple leadership principles in place are because in many smaller churches the dynamics are more like a mafia-family than a corporation. The (lay) leadership is based on patronage, family ties, and power rather than qualifications. The staff is there at the whim and will of leaders and must pay proper homage; this precludes any serious accountability.
Great blog, by the way, you have a lot of great thoughts!

I'm a big fan of assertiveness and a big critic of aggressiveness. I think I can understand--and practice--the difference in most situations, but that's different from seeing situations as black and white, one-person-right and one-person-wrong. People "stuff" is always messy. But assertiveness at least starts the conversation, which is half the battle.

Insightful. I'm copying your post to my leaders, not because they need it, necessarily, but because what you articulate is a good reminder to all of us. I'm a conflict-avoider by nature. That has cost me and the people I've served. I'm working hard to overcome that passivity.

Having said that, I'm also wary of those who seem to possess the "gift" of confrontation. I find that most people-problems are complex and nuanced. Is it really that clear to you, Jen?

I lived this type of leadership this week. It is very disheartening as a "lower" level employee to not have the back up of a their leader when in a point of crisis. It should never be ok for a leader to not have the spine to be honest and to take the hit rather then saving face for their mistake. Will this problem ever be solved? I doubt it. No matter what organization one works "for" there will be corrupt management.
