  1. Jen, just curious, why do you never want to watch the Passion of the Christ again?

  2. I’m glad I watched it once, both because of the obvious spiritual impact and because it was such a phenomenon when it came out. But it was so incredibly violent that at one point I found myself mentally disassociating from it and compiling my grocery list. I know, the actual crucifixion was likely that violent or worse. But I try to avoid movies with tons of violence and/or sex–and that includes this one. I think I can remember and appreciate the huge suffering Jesus went through without owning the DVD.

  3. Interesting take, Jen. Sometimes when I hear graphic sermons about the last 12 hours of Jesus’ life, and then compare them to the understated record in the New Testament, I wonder if the gory detail is really necessary. Same with the movie.

Maybe since the first recipients of the gospels were so well acquainted with the horrors of crucifixion, by virtue of their near proximity to it, such details weren’t necessary for them to feel the impact of the simple words “and they crucified him” (Mark 15:24).

I saw the movie back in Feb. 2004 when it came out. I’ve been thinking about renting it again. It served to remind me of the gravity of my sin…the true cost, to God, of my forgiveness. Maybe once every three years is about right, at least for me.

I know this wasn’t the true gist of your original post (was there one?) but I found the timing interesting since, like I said, I’ve been thinking about it lately.

  4. If my best friend were tortured and killed, and a video reenactment of that event existed, I personally would not watch it repeatedly.

Apparently I would watch it once though – because I did.
