American culture doesn't support a Sabbath rest. The Sabbath was a time for rest and relationship. American culture is good at neither.

We can't sit still. Rest for us is watching TV, not a leisurely walk in the park.

Further, we separate ourselves from our friends and family. The number of Americans who live alone is already staggering, but still growing. Friends and family are work to us, just not the kind that energizes us. In other cultures, a day of rest is an opportunity to spend casual time with numerous extended family and friends. "Privacy" isn't needed for most non-Americans. And relationships aren't laborious work either.

I don't know how to fix any of this; just thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth.

I had a physical and emotional breakdown several years ago when I was a missionary; it was from overwork, not enough rest. My friend Mark, a psychiatrist, told me that as long as I violate the Sabbath principle I would have trouble. I still do violate it, but I'm better. Unfortunately the western church operates in a production oriented culture and we have to produce to be valued. BW
